Kadalekalu Usuli/ Chickpeas Sundal

Kadelakalu Usuli/ Chickpeas Sundal is usually prepared during festive season like Ganesh Chaturthi or during Navarati. In Karnataka, this dish is called as 'usuli' and you can substitute Kabuli Channa with Peanuts, black channas, channa dal etc. Mom used to prepare this during Varamahalakshmi Pooja which is celebrated mainly in Karnataka or more precisely in Bangalore.

So here's the recipe of Chickpeas Sundal which is very quick and easy to prepare.


Kabuli Channa (Boiled) - 1 cup

Fresh grated coconut - 2 tbsp

Green chillies - 3 chopped

Fresh coriander leaves

Salt to taste

Turmeric powder / Haldi - A pinch

Lemon juice - 2 tsp

For tempering

Oil- 2 tsp

Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp

Few Curry leaves

Asafoetida/ Hing , a pinch

1. Soak chickpeas for 4 to 5 hours and then boil them with little salt.

2. Take 2 tsp of oil in a wok and heat it. Add in the mustard seeds. When it starts spluttering, add curry leaves and hing. Saute for a few seconds.

3. Add chopped green chillies and haldi. Saute it for few seconds.

4. Add boiled channa's and mix well. Add more salt if required as we have already added salt while boiling the channa's. Cook for 2 mins and switch off the flame.

5. Lastly add freshly grated coconut, chopped coriander leaves and few drops of lemon juice. Give a stir and enjoy.
