Bread Fruit Tava Rava Fry

It's the Bread Fruit season now and I heard that its available at Sunday Market in native on my visit last week to native. I rushed to the market with my husband but couldn't find any. So after returning back, I asked my father to get those while coming to Bangalore and he got me these lovely Bread fruits. You all might be wondering why I was in search of these fruits in native, right? Well ! its simply because you don't get it here in Bangalore except in some Mangalore and Kerala stores. We had this bread fruit tree in our rented yard during my college days and I loved it. The tree yields fruits around March and April season, and its such a lovely sight to see those hanging on the trees and ofcourse to see those being cooked by my mom ;)

Bread fruit in Kannada is called Ber Halasu or Deevigujje, in Hindi its called Barhal.

Mom prepares delicious curry from this and I always try my first hand on this recipe Rava Tava Fry which goes well as a side dish with rice or as an evening snack with tea.

So here's the recipe of Bread Fruit Tava Rava Fry


Bread fruit - ( below ingredients quantity is sufficient for 1/2 bread fruit)

Rava /Semolina/ Suji for coating

Salt to taste

Oil for frying

Red chilli powder 2-3 tsp

Turmeric powder - 1 tsp


1. Peel the bread fruit and cut it any shapes as desired but make sure the pieces should be thin. Immerse the pieces in water to get rid of gums and pat it dry.

2. Make a paste of red chilli powder, Amchur powder, Haldi and Salt by adding little water to it.

3. Apply the above paste to the bread fruit pieces and coat it with rava/suji and keep aside.

4. Heat 2-3 tsp oil on a frying pan and place these coated bread fruit pieces on it for frying . Close the lid and allow it to cook in low-medium flame.

5. Flip it and cook the other side till they are done.

Enjoy these hot and spicy Bread Fruit Tava Rava Fry with rice or as an evening snack.
